How Well are You Sleeping?
Does God Love You? “Well of course!” you might say. Here’s an interesting take from the Psalmist on one of God’s blessings for those that He loves…
Psalm 127:1 Unless the Lord builds the house, its builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchmen stand guard in vain. 2 In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat— for he grants sleep to those he loves.
God is the active one here. We may labor to build the house, guard the city, and toil for meat and potatoes, but God is the builder, the watchman, and the deliverer of all good things. This isn’t an excuse to stop toiling, but it’s an encouragement to place our trust in the one who is ultimately in control.
Without the Lord’s grace, not even one piece of bread lands on my table. Without his grace, I have no where to lay my head, and without his grace, I won’t sleep a wink. But with it, I have blessing.
God’s sovereignty and man’s responsibility always seem to fight against each other and here we see it again. I think the key is not that we work because we are in control, but we labor as lead by the One who is.
Then we will really be able to rest.
